Groovy Giveaway: As the World Turns and Guiding Light DVD Value Pack

Courtesy of SoapClassics, this week's Groovy Giveaway is a DVD Value Pack of 40 memorable episodes from the beloved daytime dramas, As the World Turns and Guiding Light. Each four-disc collection features 20 complete episodes that have been restored from the original broadcast library vault, and they are divided into four categories - "Great Weddings", "Secrets and Scandals", "Oakdale/Springfield Through the Years" and "Villains and Vixens" (you can read more about them in my review below).

To enter to win this Groovy Giveaway, all you have to do is email your name and address to deepdishdrama@aol.com. The winner must have a US or Canadian mailing address, and entries close at midnight on Friday, February 3 (CST).

If you would like to give away something groovy (DVDs, CDs, books, theatre/concert tickets) on DEEP DISH, please email me at deepdishdrama@aol.com.

So what do I think of SoapClassics' DVDs? I LOVE them! The episodes look great - and it's about time that someone had the smart idea to release classic episodes of dearly departed daytime dramas.

The As the World Turns collection features 20 episodes from 1979 to 2010 and includes:
  • Tom and Margo's 1983 wedding with the delightful Justin Deas and Margaret Colin (who were married in real life in 1988).
  • Steve and Betsy's 1984 wedding, which attracted 20 million viewers, making it the second highest-rated show in American soap opera history (after General Hospital's Luke and Laura) - and it's fun to see a young Meg Ryan again as Betsy.
  • Bob and Kim's 1985 wedding with Julianne Moore (Frannie) and Marisa Tomei (Marcy) sharing a scene.
  • The emotional 1987 episode in which Lily Walsh (Martha Byrne) learns the shattering truth that Iva (Lisa Brown) and Josh (William Fichtner) are her real parents - and actor Brian Bloom makes an appearance as the original Dusty Donovan.
Of course, no ATWT collection would be complete without such memorable characters as Carly (Maura West) and Jack (Michael Park), Holden (Jon Hensley), Luke (Van Hansis), Barbara (Colleen Zenk), Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard), John Dixon (Larry Bryggman), James Stenbeck (Anthony Herrera) and Lisa (played by the fabulous Eileen Fulton). Click here for a complete list of episodes.

The Guiding Light collection features 20 episodes from 1980 to 2009 and includes:
  • The 1980 "Death" of Roger Thorpe (played by Daytime Emmy winner Michael Zaslow) - and actor Kevin Bacon makes an appearance as Tim Werner.
  • The dramatic 1981 confrontation between Kelly Nelson (John Wesley Shipp) and a pregnant Nola Reardon (Lisa Brown) after he learns that he is not the father of her baby.
  • The 1981 outdoor wedding of Kelly and Morgan at Laurel Falls.
  • An emotional 1982 episode featuring actress Jane Elliot as Carrie Todd, who suffered from a multiple personality disorder.
  • The classic 1984 episode, in which Reva (Kim Zimmer) baptizes herself the "Slut of Springfield" in a public fountain.
And no Guiding Light collection would be complete without such memorable characters as Phillip (Grant Aleksander) and Beth (Judi Evans, Beth Chamberlin), Ed (Mart Hulswit, Peter Simon) and Maureen (Ellen Dolan, Ellen Parker), Josh (Robert Newman), Mindy (Krista Tesreau), Quinton (Michael Tylo), Alexandra (Beverlee McKinsey, Marj Dusay, Joan Collins), Alan (Christopher Bernau, Ron Raines) and beloved matriarch Bert Bauer (Charita Bauer). Click here for a complete list of episodes.

Below are the original, uncut versions of the As the World Turns and Guiding Light tributes that were not aired during the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2010 and 2009, respectively.

Groovy Commercial: Ferris Bueller is alive and well and driving a Honda

To promote their new 2012 CR-V, Honda has brought back actor Matthew Broderick in an amusing Super Bowl ad spoofing his 1986 John Hughes comedy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Almost two million people have watched it since it was posted on YouTube last week - but over 1,500 have disliked it because they were hoping for an actual sequel or feel the commercial has somehow tarnished the beloved original. Oh please, get a sense of humor, people. At least Ferris Bueller hasn't returned as a shitty remake like 2004's The Stepford Wives or 2008's The Women. Now that would be something to bitch about.

Live from Downton Abbey, it's Shirley MacLaine

I am so excited by the news that actress Shirley MacLaine will be joining the cast of the British TV series, Downton Abbey, for its third season, which begins production next month. She will play Martha Levinson, the mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern), whom I'm sure will have some delightful conversations with Maggie Smith's Countess. I also find it interesting that MacLaine already had a connection to the show - executive producer Gareth Neame's late grandfather, Ronald Neame, directed her and Michael Caine in the 1966 romantic comedy caper, Gambit (you can watch its trailer below). His other films include I Could Go On Singing (1963) with Judy Garland, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) with Dame Maggie, and The Poseidon Adventure (1972).

31 Cold Days of Hot Guys #30: Jean Dujardin

This month DEEP DISH is featuring a different hot guy(s) every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.

Today's Hot Guy is 39-year-old French actor Jean Dujardin, who won a Screen Actors Guild Award last night for his wonderful performance in Michel Hazanavicius' film, The Artist. Below you can watch him in the 2009 James Bond spoof, OSS 117: Lost in Rio (also directed by Hazanavicius), in which he reminds me of a young Sean Connery.

Dish of the Day #826: The Young and the Shirtless

Every Monday through Friday a new Dish of the Day is featured, and beginning on Friday you can vote for your favorite Dish of the week. If you haven't voted for last week's Dish yet, choose your man in the sidebar poll.

Today's Dish is Aaron O'Connell.

Winter Play...

As I'm finishing another 3 day purgatory serving "the man", others have been getting out and playing.

Thanks to Mike for sending this pic of him cruising the Mohican trail system on his Groovy Kauai 650b 1x9, courtesy of Jason and his 15mm wide angle fish eye lens.

Got a cool pic you want to share with the Groovy family, send it in.  If nothing else, it makes me smile when I can't get out.

Collosial week done, moving forward...

"Our 18 month old patient will require .01 mg/kg of Epi (.1 ml/kg 1:10000) IV push circulated with cpr at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute followed by a 2 J/kg asyncronis shock.  If Torsades persists, we will consider Mag sulfate..."

so went my week teaching pediatric advanced life support.  If it sounds like a mouthful, just be glad you're reading it and not expected to know what it means, let alone be on the opposite side of the table from this anal retentive instructor :)  It was a loooong week, spending 92 hours in the fire department and only about 8 in the shop, but I'm glad it's over.

The few hours I did have, I was able to get the steel rear end repair completed and ready for color.  This one will likely be a powder coat, so that it has increased knock around durability for it's travel heavy use.

Final parts are ordered for the bikes going to Nahbs and I'll be charging forward with those builds hard and heavy starting on Monday.

If y'all have not seen the Nahbs page yet, I've been trickling in some more pics to update the Exhibitor profile and keep me on the front page.  It's been fun looking through the hundreds of files on the laptop to find some cool bikes to put on there.  So many pics of poor quality though, I need to get a pro photographer in house to live under the porch and exist on table scraps so I can document these things before they go out the door.  Anyhoo, if ya wanna see what's on the page, there are a ton of cool builders to comb through...

See y'all soon,
